[edit] Enlightenment

It was during the Keepers' visit to the Badger Clan's provinces that Asahina Hira took on the mantle of Keeper of Void. He was originally assigned as the shugenja adviser of a young Crane courtier, Doji Koin, who considered him a blind old fool.

Hira was assigned to this remote duty due to his embarrassing the Phoenix Clan, as it is extremely rare for a shugenja with an affinity for the Void to be born outside the Phoenix. The truth though, is that Hira and Tsuken are descended from a spirit returned through Oblivion's Gate, a Phoenix called Nariaki, who was a criminal who underwent The Forgetting.

Whilst assigned to the Badger Clan provinces, he heard much information pertinent to the Keepers' investigations. Despite his blindness, he is extraordinarily perceptive. Rather than use his conventional senses, the Void talks to him, reporting his surroundings. He is especially good at reading people.

When the Keepers found themselves in an ancient tomb within the Badger lands, it was Asahina Hira who read the arcane kanji on the pillars, deciphering them and reading them aloud. The tomb was a temple dedicated to Ryoshun, and the first Badger, Domogu was charged with its protection.

Having saved the Badger Clan from losing their claim as a clan, the old shugenja sat for a moment within the temple, and tracing his hands over the worn rock walls, found a book hidden within a cleft in the wall. Completing a task greater than all the other Keepers, succeeding where they had not, Hira claimed the Book of Void.[1]

[edit] The Death of Rosoku

Upon the death of Rosoku, Emperor Toturi III looked to Hira for solace and answers. Naseru took heart in the words;

Asahina Hira: "Time heals all wounds."'

Toturi III: "As two men with only one good eye between us we both know that is not true."

Asahina Hira: "We have overcome our injuries, my lord, and to find strength is a form of healing."

It was during this conversation that Hira sensed that the final keeper, Asahina Sekawa, Keeper of the Five Rings had been chosen.
